Wenn ein leistungsfähiges europäisches Fernübertragungsnetz und ein vereinter Elektrizitäts-Binnenmarkt geschaffen werden und mit ähnlichen Netzen und Märkten in Nordafrika verbunden werden, können bis zur Mitte des Jahrhunderts Erneuerbare Energieträger in großem Maßstab genutzt werden.

Das geht aus einem in der vergangenen Woche von der Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft PricewaterhouseCoopers veröffentlichten Bericht hervor.

Eine Gruppe von Energie- und Klimaexperten des Unternehmens hatte gemeinsam mit Wissenschaftlern vom Potsdam-Institut für Klimafolgenforschung (PIK), dem International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) und dem European Climate Forum mögliche Transformationen des europäischen und nordafrikanischen Stromsektors untersucht.

Die Umstellung auf Erneuerbare könnte Energiesicherheit bieten, die Stromerzeugung dekarbonisieren und Energiearmut verringern, heißt es in dem Bericht.

Renewable energy sources could be used at scale by 2050 if supported by an efficient European transmission grid and a single European power market united with similar grids and markets in North Africa.

This is shown in a new report released last week by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

A group of energy and climate experts from the company in collaboration with researchers of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and the European Climate Forum (ECF) have examined possible transformation paths for the European and North African power sector.

A transformation of the power sector based on one hundred percent renewables would address energy security and supply concerns while decarbonising electricity generation and at the same time reduce energy poverty, the report says.

The study provides policy makers and business leaders with clear direction and a step wise approach on how to achieve the 2050 vision.

The study looks at the market in terms of financial, infrastructure and government policy milestones for policy makers and business to answer the "what if" question. The roadmap addresses four critical areas of intervention: Policy, Markets, Investments and Infrastructure and looks at the ability to foster a stable, long term and transparent regulatory framework that will promote confidence with investors and enable the build-up of the required supply chain and grid infrastructure.
